Four ways to make sure your family session is a success

I photographed Ash and Georgia’s wedding a few years ago in this very field in Perth so it was so lovely to be back at Yellagonga National park in Perth meeting their two little ones photographing their new family. What a beautiful family, they were relaxed and seemed to just be enjoying the new season together while I snapped away in the background taking photos.

Family photography sessions can seem overwhelming and stressful sometimes I know! You have to get the whole family there, work around nap times, make sure everyone is fed, happy and clean! It’s a big deal! So here are a few little tips to make your family session less stressful and fun so you can get those natural beautiful candid shots where everyone is truly having fun and you will have beautiful memories to look back on for ever.

1. Go with the flow and be present with your loves.

Sometimes there will be tears, sometimes tantrums, but most of the time that will pass and the kids will get on with having a great time in nature. Let them explore, let them be free and we will get beautiful candid photo’s to remember this crazy beautiful time in your lives.

2. Choose a location where the kids can be themselves and have fun.

Choose a location that you enjoy, that’s fits you guys as a family. If you love the beach please choose the beach and watch everyone come to life, running and getting their toes wet. A field or park are also great options with lots to explore and space to run and be free.

3. Choose colours and outfits that dont date.

Bring your outfits with you and change once you get to the location. Neutrals are great for this. Dont match but choose complimentary colours and patterns. Youll be more likely to look back on these in ten years and still love them.

4. Make sure everyone is well fed.

We all get hangry when we are hungry right! Well fed bubba’s (even if they are tired) will make things a lot easier.

At the end of the day, being present and enjoying the time with your loves is what is most important and ill be in the background snapping away and capturing memories for you to treasure for a lifetime.

The kids are wearing outfits by Marlow and Mae and Soll the label.

Lily- 5 days new

Is this not the cutest little gal you have ever seen. Little Lily was just 5 days old when I photographed her as a tiny newborn. She slept for the whole hour, what a little dream.

Noella, Perth Newborn Photoshoot

Noella was the sweetest little gal, just 5 days old and the perfect model, making my job as a newborn photographer so easy! I mean just look at that little face!

When is the perfect time for a newborn photoshoot you ask? For these free sleepy newborn images I recommend 2-12 days, while they’re still sleepy and so easy to put to sleep and move around. But if you’ve missed the boat or you aren’t feeling up to them just yet there is no real perfect time, when they’re older it sometimes just takes a little longer to get them to sleep or to move them around but its still so worth capturing, as everyone always says they grow soooo fast and this is the perfect way to freeze this ever fleeting moment in your families life!

The next question I get asked a lot is do we need to prepare anything? Nope not really! I bring the blankets, cover, wraps, baskets. A little bow is sometimes a super cute addition if you have one and if you guys dress in neutrals we really cant go wrong.

Do you come to us? Absolutely, I will use a corner in your house where the lighting is lovely, usually your bedroom or living area but sometimes even your bathroom.

How long do newborn sessions go for? It totally ranges on how bub is going. If we can get your little one asleep quickly then usually an hour but if theyre needing some extra tlc then sometimes even two hours. Feeding and changing your bub before I get there helps this but there is no way to control how your little one will do that day so we just role with it.

Family summer session at Trigg beach

Perth you did it again, I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect evening for a family photoshoot down at the beach.

For every family session my goal is to let your little one’s personalities shine through. I want to give you images that wholly represent you and capture the essence of the love you share together. Part of this is letting kids be kids, let them run, let them cry, let them be crazy or quiet, whatever there personality is- let it shine through. If that means I spend half the time trying to keep up with them or I'm quietly walking with them as they explore thats fine by me!

These little loves were so sweet, it was one of the hottest summer days in Perth but that didn’t bother them. It was over 40 degrees but I decided not to cancel hoping it would cool down as the sun set, and it did. Im so glad we went ahead, the hot day made for a balmy perfect summer evening down by the ocean. It was the sort of evening you spend down at the beach and want to remember forever, not a lick of wind and the warm water making it literally perfect.
